A scheme to help patients become experts in their own long-term illnesses is being launched.
The Durham and Chester-le-Street Primary Care Trust plans to pilot an Expert Patient Programme.
Today, it is holding an event, at the Bullion Hall, South Approach, Chester-le-Street, between 10.45am and 3.15pm, to explain the idea to patients, doctors and nurses.
The programme will offer courses to help people cope with chronic conditions and illnesses including arthritis, asthma, back pain, diabetes, heart problems, multiple sclerosis and mental problems.
Patients will receive their normal treatment, but will also get advice on things such as finding information about their problems, talking to doctors and coping with depression.
Fiona Anderson, the trust's local advisory group support worker, said: "Research has shown that the overall benefits of Expert Patient Programmes, or user-led self management courses for people with long-term conditions or illnesses, are numerous.
"They can help reduce severe symptoms, improve quality of life and increase patient confidence.
"Doctors and medical staff have also found that the programmes help improve relationships with patients and actually reduce consultation or frequency of visits as the patient feels more empowered and in control.
"We expect to start the first course in July and hope that the event today will encourage many local people to become Expert Patients.''
Trust chief executive Andrew Young said: "We must respect the wealth of knowledge and expertise accumulated by patients with long-term conditions, often over many years, and learn how better to work in partnership, patients and professionals, to provide the best care possible.''
