St Cuthbert's RC Church in Old Elvet, Durham, is celebrating its 175th anniversary with a flower festival this weekend.
The festival, on the theme of St Cuthbert's heritage, will begin with a gala evening of music and refreshments tomorrow at 7.30pm. Admission is £4 at the door and the church opens for viewing of the 21 floral displays on Saturday from 10.30am to 4.30pm, or on Sunday from 12.30 to 4.30pm. DANCE NIGHT: Durham Indoor Bowling club at Pity Me is staging a 50/50 Dance Night on Saturday between 8pm and 11pm. Admission is £2 for members and £2.50 for non-members. OPEN EVENING: Selby Cottage Childcare Centre, in South Pelaw, Chester-le-Street, holds an open evening for prospective parents/carers to have a look around and talk to staff, on Tuesday from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. The centre offers services for ages up to 12, including pre-school, before and after school sessions, plus holiday clubs.
BRASS SOUNDS: The Bearpark and Esh Colliery Band will be performing in the grounds of the dli, formerly the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery, Aykley Heads, Durham, on Sunday at 2.30pm. Admission is free. The concert is one of a series being held throughout the summer.
ROCK NIGHT: Icebreaker, a four-piece band playing covers from the 1960s to 1990s, will be playing at The Daisy Hill, Heugh Edge, near Sacriston, tomorrow night at 8.30pm. Admission is free. For details call the venue on 0191-371 0288.
GROUP MEETS: The Durham City Young Embroiderers Group, for youngsters aged seven to 18 who are interested in textiles and embroidery, meets on Saturday in the dli, formerly the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery, between 10.15am and 12.15pm. Admission costs 50p plus normal gallery admission.
CONCERT DATE: The Agus Singers, featuring Mark Dowd on piano, will perform light choral and piano music on Saturday at 7.30pm in Elvet Methodist Church, Durham. Tickets cost £4 and are available at the door or from Durham Tourist Information Centre in the Gala Theatre complex, Claypath.
NEW BASE: Durham Police Authority has approved plans to move the section office at Murton from the junction of Woods Terrace and Claude Terrace to Glebe Centre later this summer.
IN CONCERT: Organist Michael Smith will be the guest artist at a Queen's Golden Jubilee concert by Stanhope Silver Band at St Thomas's Church, Stanhope, on Sunday at 7pm. Tickets are £3.
GUIDED WALK: Local historian David Butler will lead a four-mile walk, called Where Was Newton Hall?, this evening at 6pm, starting at the car park of the dli, formerly the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery. The walk costs £2 for adults, concessions £1
