PLANS for the biggest road improvement scheme in Weardale for more than 20 years have brought protests from councillors, farmers and businesses.
The resurfacing scheme, costing £400,000, will involve closing the A689 - the main route through the dale - from 9pm every night until 7am the next day for more than three weeks.
Alternative routes put forward by Durham County Council have been described as "nightmarish and absurd".
Although Weardale residents welcome the resurfacing of the road, they say the council has not thought the scheme through properly.
Stanhope Parish Council has written to the county council complaining that it was not consulted and asking for more details about the closure of the A689 for one-and-a-half miles between Stanhope and Eastgate
