A supermarket will close its doors for the last time this weekend.

Morrisons, in Neasham Road, Darlington, is closing on Saturday to make way for clothing giant Matalan.

The supermarket announced in May that it wanted to concentrate on its other Darlington stores in North Road and Morton Park.

Staff at the 45,000 sq ft store have been relocated to other stores in the region.

Morrisons says all 159 workers have taken up positions in the two Darlington stores, Bishop Auckland and Stockton supermarkets.

Some members of management at the Neasham Road site will transfer to the new Morrisons supermarket in Redcar, which opens later this year.

A Morrisons spokeswoman said: "All the staff have been relocated. It is good news for some of them as they have relocated to a store closer to their homes, others have been promoted.

"It will be business as usual in the store on Saturday. Customers are being given money off vouchers to use at the other two Darlington shops. We want to encourage shoppers to stay with us."

Staff and management at the Neasham Road store will be holding a private farewell party on June 28.

Matalan, which specialises in cut price clothing, will take over the site two days later. It will create over 100 jobs when it opens in the autumn.
