Sunday's Opening Day for Coarse Fishing on the rivers was dealt a cruel blow as the heavens opened on Friday and floods galore, writes JEFF HERBERT.
Undeterred anglers were out in force with the region hosting six major events. The Lower Tees despite the adverse conditions elswhere was in perfect trim - a nice colour and flowing steady - all down to the excellent control the Tees Barrage offers.
Yarm AA's Parker Adams Memorial certainly did the Glorious June 16 justice with a truly great match. 29 double figured weights came from the 79 turnout and best of all it was bream all along the Rudds Bank to Eaglescliffe Golfcourse which revelled in the conditions.
Cleveland & Darlington Angling Centre boss Peter Rambow senior enjoyed a tremendous start to the season during a super match bagging 33.12.0 which augurs well for the forthcoming big Fish 'A' Mania and Embassy Events.
In the cabbage patch below Lambs stream groundbait feeder with worm and maggot saw Peter net ten good skimmers in an action packed opening hour.
Working a midriver line chublets and roach along with another seven bream ensured a delighted Peter lifted the trophy.
Runner up Peter Jones of Map Elton included a big 6.0.0 bream on the pole catching skimmers and odd roach on both the feeder and pole off Fisheries Bend for 26.12.0.
Others in the frame: 3 Paul Stephenson (RSPS) 25.3.0; 4 Steve Wood (CAC) 24.1.0; 5 Rob Morgan (CAC) 21.14.0. 6 Chris Hawkes (CAC) 21.9.0.
Small fish were the order of the day from the Croft to Hurworth streth of the middle Tees for the Thornaby AA Derek A Lea Memorial and Darlington's Mick Watson in the salmon pool worked stickfloat through alternating caster and corn to attract four chub and dace for 14.7.0.
Meanwhile George Pierce of Brotton in the Butchers field weighed in a lovely mainly dace and bag of 9.8.0 to caster and stickfloat ahead of Steve Chantry Quaker Tackle 9.6.0.
The Northallerton and District Non Plus Cup on the Swale reverted to a struggle for the depleted field of 38 on the swollen and coloured reaches at Scruton.
Northallerton's Craig Walley pulled out the jetty corner peg 59 and made the scoresheet look respectable returning seven chub from a nearside slack to legered worm for 23.12.0.
Northallerton Angling Centre's Jim Prescott followed off peg 33 as bomb and feeder with bread resulted in four chub enough for 16.0.0.
Northallerton and District Monday Evening Series (Round 1) - River Swale at Scruton: 1 Paul Bosomsworth 17.3.0 6 chub to bomb and bread; 2 Derrick Parrington 13.10.0; 3 Pat Adams 11.4.0.
The top six all cracked the double figure mark despite poor conditions on the Upper reaches of the Swale during the Bambridge Cup.
Darlington's Peter Gamblin pegged opposite Catterick Village swapped between maggot and caster on the float to locate a mixture of dace chublets and grayling for an impressive 15.5.0.
Fellow rod Martin Chapman on the famous Killerby Stakes used a variety of hookbaits meat bread and cheese via a feeder rig taking four nice chub to total 14.10.0.
The Ouse was carrying a depressing seven foot of dirty water for the annual big curtain raiser the York & District AA York Tackle Shop Open and there was little chance of the anticipate big bream weights.
Armley's John Kryowski needed just 4.6.8 to topple the 54 competitors.
Fishing behind the big crack willow opposite Church Farm groundbait feeder and worm tempted three fish a small barbel an eel and a roach.
For Mick Glover of Leeds on the little sandbed below Killingbeck legered worm brought 3.11.0.
The Nidd had dropped to two foot above normal come the Bradford No 1 AA Rosebowl at Cowthorpe but a badly stained river was always going to make it hard going.
Andy Baker of Buttershore WMC lost two fish yet still managed to hang onto victory. Drawing peg 30 below the dip hole bomb and meat tamed a brace of barbel for 9.12.0.
Thanks to a super barbel of 8.0.0 Bradford's Howard Foster clinched runner up spot adding a small roach to boost his score to 8.7.0 from peg 14 on ledgered lobworm.
Carp Scene
THERE was some tremendous weights during Wednesday Woodlands match split between three of the match lakes.
Elton Tackle's Kevin Holvey rattled out 89.6-0 to win on another busy day for the scalesman.
Drawing Skylark 11 Kevin was kept busy from start to finish. On the inside at five metres an impressive mixed bag came to the pellet and included his best fish a carp of 5.0.0.
