England have bowed out of the World Cup after they were beaten 2-1 by ten-man Brazil in Shizuoka.
Ronaldinho's strike five minutes into the second half proved to be the decisive goal for Luiz Felipe Scolari's side who will now face Turkey or Senegal in the semis.
Goal hero Ronaldinho turned villain minutes later when he was harshly sent off for a challenge on Danny Mills.
Sven Goran Eriksson's men got off to the best possible start when Michael Owen pounced on a Lucio error before coolly slotting past Marcos in the 23rd minute.
With half-time approaching Brazil drew level.
The menacing Ronaldinho mesmerised the England defence with a jinking run before laying the ball through for Rivaldo who placed the ball first time past David Seaman.
Within five minutes of the restart Brazil were in front when Ronaldinho's 42-yard free-kick from the right caught out Seaman off his line.
Whether the PSG star meant to lob Seaman from such a distance and angle remains open for debate but it didn't matter to the Brazilians who are now well on course to claim a record fifth World Cup title.
In the day's other quarter-final Germany sealed their place in the last four with a 1-0 win over the USA in Ulsan.
A 39th minute strike from Michael Ballack was enough to take Rudi Voller's side into a semi-final clash with Spain or South Korea.
Ballack made no mistake from close range, powering his header past Brad Friedel from Christian Ziege's cross.
