THE Army goes public tomorrow - rolling out its big guns for their first major display for two years.
The foot-and-mouth crisis put paid last year to the annual open day at the British Army's biggest European base at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire.
Units from across the region were called in to help with the culls and the clear-up operation, which meant too few were available to help with the popular event.
But this year, those who have not been called on to help in the Middle East, are back at base and will be demonstrating their skills at Marne Barracks, next to the A1 at Catterick, tomorrow.
Britain's military is renowned throughout the world for its immaculate pageantry, pomp and circumstance and this year will be no different.
In recent years - 2001 aside - the event has gained a reputation as one of the most spectacular one-day summer shows in the North, attracting huge crowds of more than 10,000 people with visitors travelling from as far away as Ireland.
Last year's loss has pushed the organisers to make up for that by providing an even more spectacular event this year.
What is more, this year promises to be just that little bit special, marking the Queen's Golden Jubilee with a larger number of attractions for the whole family.
Given fair weather, visitors can expect a memorable day out and the possibility of meeting local MP and former Tory leader William Hague and his wife, Ffion, who have both pledged to lend their support to the day and help raise money for charity.
The charitable causes, which include the Army Benevolent Fund, are at the very heart of the day and organisers hope to raise more than £10,000.
Using the barracks' old airfield ensures that all the displays of military hardware are close together and easily accessible for all.
And when the stars of the day perform in the central arena, it means that wherever anyone is on the showground they will only be a short walk away.
Highlights in the arena include the world famous White Helmets and Honda Imps motorcycle display teams.
Gurkhas from the Infantry Training Centre in the Garrison, will also give a spectacular demonstration of tae kwon do.
In addition, the Band of the Light Division and the Pipe Band of 105 Battalion REME (V) will perform some of the traditional anthems and tunes associated with the British Army.
But throughout the day there are activities to be enjoyed all over the airfield with static military displays - including a Gazelle helicopter and AS90 artillery vehicle, trade stands and plenty of places to enjoy a meal with a drink or two.
One of the most popular features at the open day is the chance to hitch a ride in a variety of military vehicles from the mighty 30-tonne Warrior armoured fighting vehicle to smaller reconnaissance armoured vehicles such as a Scimitar.
"All the indications are that this year will produce bumper crowds and we are confident that we will provide an exciting and full day's entertainment for everyone," said organiser, Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Howard-Vyse.
Gates open at Marne Barracks at 10am tomorrow. Admission costs £1 for adults and 50p for children, with all proceeds divided between the Army Benevolent Fund and a number of local charities
