At the National Veteran Rowing Championships on the multi- lane course at Nottingham ,Tees Rowing Club scullers won two gold medals - bettering in the best possible way the silver and bronze they won last year.
Paul Buckworth, racing in the Veteran A (over 31) Single sculls event and Johnnie and David Cooper in the veteran B (over 36) Double Sculls overcame some tricky wind conditions and the opposition to claim the Tees club's first gold medals in these championships.
Paul's win was particularly noteworthy as he beat the reigning champion, Ben Clarke, who had won in each of the previous three years.
Nearer to home, other Tees Veterans continued the club's successful season in this class of racing with two wins at Durham Regatta.
The Veteran D (over 50) Eight had one of the closest results of the day when they beat Durham ARC by just one foot to win their event. The crew were Steve Vaslet, Alan Parsons, Peter Mackfall, Dick Wilkinson, John Green, Tony Stocking, Chris Kenyon, Dilwyn Jones and cox John Heron.
The other win was a tremendous triumph for two of the Tees women, Janet Wilkinson and Angela Warburton, who were racing in Veteran D (over 50) Double sculls..
They found themselves opposed yet again in the final by the Durham ARC crew who had run out winners on their three previous meetings this year. This time, however, the tables were turned and the Tees duo collected the silverware.
Meanwhile on the riverbank the Tees Juniors were not to be outdone. In a special Land Rowing Competition, promoted to improve skills and teamworking, the Tees Juniors - Rebekah and Ben Warburton, Sarah and Emma Scarr, Melissa Meikle, Justin Ramsden, Elizabeth Brophy and team captain David Inman - were winners over local club Durham ARC.
