WHEN beat bobby PC Simon Stewart-Piercy agreed to help out at the village school fete, little did he imagine he would end up in the stocks for his trouble.
And there was no shortage of pupils at Bloemfontein Primary School in Craghead, near Stanley, volunteering to hurl a sopping wet sponge in his direction.
"I've no idea how I got roped into this," said PC Stewart-Piercy who is community policeman for the area, "but it was a moment of utter madness."
PC Stewart-Piercy's appearance was a highlight of school's annual fair which raises money for school funds. Children paid 10p for each throw of a wet sponge and the game-for-a-laugh policeman, who was in full uniform, ended up being thoroughly doused in water as children tipped a bucket over him.
