STORE INSIGHT: Margaret Middlebrook, representing Boyes Stores, gave a slide presentation detailing the history of the chain, to Cleveland Retired Men's Association.
She took 60 members through the lifetime of her employers starting with William Boyes, who opened his first shop in Scarborough in 1892, to the company's most recent shop at Bridlington, which opened in 1998. The association meets every Wednesday at the Regency Hotel Redcar, at 10.30am.
THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT: Representatives of Cleveland Accordionaires combined with other entertainers to provide entertainment for more than 70 clients of Redcar and Cleveland's social services department at Grosmont Day Care Centre, Redcar, as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations. Those attending were from South Bank, Grangetown, Eston, Marske, New Marske, and Dormanstown as well as Redcar. They enjoyed a lunch and tea, interspersed with entertainment and bingo. The event was organised on behalf of the council by Janet Duffy.
CONCERT SUCCESS: Redcar Male Voice Choir, led by Margaret Fick, assisted by Jean Weir, entertained members of the Coatham Parish Church ladies group, at the invitation of Gillian Nixon and Pat Snowdon. With five birthdays falling in the same week, and that of Alice Harland being on the actual concert day, there was much to sing about, especially as compere Martin McNulty added his usual anecdotes and comedy patter to the programme. Solos by Keith Burns and Ray Davis, assisted by David Armstrong and Tony Clarke, and a piano interlude by Bill Butler, before Martin and Margaret completed their programme, provided an excellent afternoon's entertainment.
ON SONG: Although short of one singer through illness, the Melody Makers, of Redcar, led a spirited performance at Eaglescliffe Community Centre Ladies Section bi-weekly meeting. Introduced by Jean Arckless, the Melody Makers provided a mix of popular chorus songs. Memories were jogged as the songs followed a well-prepared programme. Days of the Girl Guides and summer camps, ATS, WAAFS and other service organisations were all recalled by an appreciative audience. A similar programme was on offer at St David's Residential Home Lord Street, Redcar, where entertainments organiser Irene Curr introduced the singers to residents of the home, family visitors and other members of staff.
