A NORTH Yorkshire sailing club was celebrating yesterday after winning recognition of its training policies for young members.

Ripon Sailing Club has been awarded Volvo Royal Yachting Association Champion Club status.

"This is great news, particularly for our youth members," said Commodore Jeremy Bartle.

"We have been working hard to establish a strong programme of coaching and race training for our young sailors, and it is great that our efforts have been recognised."

The Champion Club scheme aims to support clubs all over the country to develop the best race training programmes for their young sailors. It hopes to help guarantee Britain's future success in international competition, including the Olympics.

Ripon Sailing Club is one of only 100 clubs from 1,300 in the UK to make the grade.

"To achieve this level of excellence required a considerable effort by Ripon Sailing Club and its members and we are delighted to grant them this award," said the RYA's youth manager, Steve Joel.
