Greg Rusedski is through to the second round after beating Austria's Jurgen Melzer 6-1 6-4 7-5.
Rusedski began strongly losing just one game in the first set. He then broke the young Austrian's serve once in the second to go two sets up (6-4).
The third set was a much closer affair with both player's managing to break each others serve before Rusedski broke Melzer's again in the 11th game, where he served out the rest of the match to win 7-5.
Pete Sampras's bid for an eighth Wimbledon title has began with a straight sets victory over Britain's Martin Lee.
Sampras, still recovering from a rib injury, was far from his best but still proved too strong for Lee, winning 6-3 7-6 6-3.
Last year's quarter-finalist Marat Safin has progressed to the second round following a straight sets win over Frenchman Cedric Pioline.
Second seed Safin edged the first set 7-6(7) before stepping up a gear in the second and third, winning 6-2 6-3.
Serena Williams has strolled into the second round after beating Australian Evie Dominikovic in straight sets, 6-1 6-1.
On centre court Andre Agassi made light work of Harel Levy, winning in straight sets, 6-0 6-4 6-4.
The unseeded Anna Kournikova crashed at the first hurdle against 21st seed Tatiana Panova, losing 6-1 4-6 6-4.
Eleventh seed Daniela Hantuchova made it through to the second round with a 6-3 6-2 win over Spaniard Cristina Torrens Valero.
On court three Dutchman Richard Krajicek beat Franco Squillari 6-2 7-5 7-6(5).
