A SCHEME to deliver jobs and training in an area blighted by unemployment has been nominated for a national award.
Tesco has been put forward for a Business in the Community Neighbourhood Renewal Award, for its work in Dragonville, Durham.
The superstore's Dragonville Partnership aimed to regenerate the area surrounding its new 24-hour shop. The project was shortlisted for its success in delivering jobs and training to hundreds of people in the area, and for bringing the brownfield land back into economic use.
Four other projects run elsewhere in the country by J Sainsbury, TXU, UBS Warbury and Zurich Financial Services have been short-listed for the award, which has been sponsored by Powergen and developed by Business in the Community.
Powergen's marketing director, John Evans, said: "I think the quality of the entries shows just how much companies are trying to put something back into the communities in which they operate."
The winner will be announced on July 11.
