THE achievements of children at special needs schools in Darlington were being celebrated at a ceremony last night.
Almost 30 pupils aged 15 and 16 from McMullen House and Higher Horizons - schools for pupils who have found it hard to settle in mainstream education - were presented with certificates for their academic achievements.
Carol Ackham, Darlington Borough Council's manager for Education Other Than at School, said: "Most mainstream schools have a record of achievement ceremony, where pupils are presented with certificates and honoured for their achievements.
"We wanted to do the same thing for pupils not in mainstream education, because their achievements matter as much, if not more."
The ceremony at New Grange Hotel, in Darlington, was attended by pupils, parents, teachers and council officials.
