THE Guide Dogs for the Blind Association hopes to put other fundraising events in the shade next month.
The charity will hold its second Shades for a Day campaign on Tuesday, July 16.
It hopes more than half a million people will raise sponsorship for vital ophthalmic research by wearing their sunglasses.
Among them will be the Mayor Sunderland, Councillor Peter Gibson, who said: "The initiative will highlight the importance of eye care in the sun, as well as hopefully raising lots of money for the association."
Charity chief executive Geraldine Peacock said: "Too often, we ignore our most precious sense - that of sight.
"Shades for a Day is a fun way of reminding everyone to look after their eyes and be cool at the same time."
