British number one Tim Henman has began his quest for a first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon with a straight sets win over France's Jean-Francois Bachelot.
It took just over 90 minutes for the British number one to see off qualifier Bachelot, winning 6-1 6-3 6-2 in just over 90 minutes.
Henman will meet Austrailia's Scott Draper in the next round after he beat fellow qualifier Cristiano Caretti of Italy, 6-3 4-6 6-4 7-5.
Number one seed Lleyton Hewitt made his way into the next round with a 6-4 7-5 6-1 victory over Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman.
The biggest shock of the day followed Hewitt's victory on centre court when seventh seed Roger Federer was knocked out by Croatian Mario Ancic, 6-3 7-6(2) 6-3.
In a five set thriller on court 18, Australian Open Champion, Thomas Johansson was beaten by Brazilian Flavio Saretta, 7-6 6-4 7-6 3-6 12-10.
In the women's singles Venus Williams, bidding for a third successive Wimbledon title, saw off Britain's Jane O'Donoghue in devastating fashion, winning 6-1 6-1.
Fourth seed Monica Seles looked in fine form too as she disposed of Spain's Eva Bes in a 6-0 6-0 whitewash.
