Sedgefield Borough Council plans to build a Sure Start family centre on the site of the former Praxis textiles factory in Dean Bank, Ferryhill.
A planning application has been submitted. The proposed building would have both single-storey and two-storey elements providing facilities for the support of young families, including training, childcare and crche areas. There would also be an enclosed safe play area outside, next to car park with ten spaces. A report to the council's development control committee says: "The council's acquisition of the Praxis site and planned clearance of those buildings has provided a unique opportunity to look at the development potential of a significant area of land within this terraced housing area."
Some residents have raised concerns about the loss of open space, but officers say there may be scope for some open space. The planning application will be heard tomorrow. Planning officers are recommending the scheme is approved.
