NEWCASTLE boss Bobby Robson is pondering another cross-channel raid for French wing-back Jeremie Brechet.
Robson is refusing to be deterred by the Magpies' galling experiences with Gallic stars like Didier Domi, Franck Dumas, Alain Goma and, most recently, Sylvain Distin.
All four ultimately quit Tyneside under a cloud, with Distin electing to join Kevin Keegan's Manchester City in a £4m deal at the end of last season, having been offered terms by Newcastle after an eight-month loan from Paris St. Germain.
But now Brechet, who Lyon rate at £4m, is being strongly linked with a move to St James' Park.
The 22-year-old has revealed a desire to play in the Premiership and his versatility could make him a serious target for Robson.
Brechet, who has one cap, can play on either flank as well as at centre-back, and is tipped to form part of France's rebuilding plans following their World Cup exit.
Robson is certain to step up his interest if Newcastle fail to prevent another Frenchman, Olivier Bernard, defecting to West Ham.
The Geordies are contesting the Hammers' approach for Bernard, who joined on a free from Lyon nearly two years ago, at a tribunal in London today.
Meanwhile, England midfielder Kieron Dyer has applauded Robson's attempt to sign his former Ipswich Town teammate Titus Bramble.
Newcastle have failed with a £4.2m bid for the central defender, but are expected to return with an improved offer.
Dyer said: "I think a move now can give Titus a fresh start and I hope he ends up with us at Newcastle.
"Ipswich have sadly been relegated and I think he can develop in the Premiership with us.
"He can develop into a world-class central defender. I know he had a disappointing time last season - possibly he got a bit stale. It can happen with young players.
"But I'd put my money on Titus getting full England status on Tyneside.
"Ipswich have done well for him and I think he has done well for Ipswich.
"He has all the attributes, including great skill and strength.
"Bobby Robson can bring out the best in anyone, and he can do it with Titus."
