A DRUGS crackdown has been stepped up in a North-East town.

Middlesbrough Police's Dealer a Day campaign has seen a raid a day for the past week.

Heroin, cannabis plants and cannabis resin were seized in the latest operation, and five people arrested for drugs offences.

A 38-year-old and a 33-year-old man have since been charged with possession of cannabis and bailed to appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court. Another two men and a woman were granted police bail pending forensic tests.

There have been 256 arrests since the Dealer a Day operation was launched last year, with drugs with a street value of more than £68,000 recovered and over £39,000 seized as a result of 270 raids.

Inspector Gary Gamesby of Cleveland Police said: "There will be no let up in our campaign to stamp out the menace of drugs.

"We will continue daily raids to bring home the message that drugswill not be tolerated in Middlesbrough.''

He urged residents to keep their information about the movements of drug dealers coming.
