THE JUNIOR Great North Run is being given "a leg up" to ensure it enjoys the same nationwide appeal as the senior event.

Children's BBC (CBBC) is getting on board to screen the Bupa-sponsored junior run live for the first time this year.

Four yet-to-be announced children's TV presenters are to lead teams to which the increased field of 8,000 competitors, aged under 17, will be attached.

A new course is being introduced, with the event switching from its start and finish at Gateshead Stadium to a circular route taking in the Gateshead and Newcastle quays, via the Millennium and Swing bridges.

The 4km junior race, traditionally on the Saturday morning on the eve of main run, will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, October 5 to be screened by CBBC.

Organisers, Nova International, have extended the entry from the usual 4,500 and hope many of the extra runners will be from further afield than the North-East.

Marketing director David Hart said: "CBBC will not only be assisting with the promotion of the event, but will also be broadcasting it live."

Events will be extended to include a Great North Party, with competitors invited to a concert hosted by Adrian Dickson, of CBBC, after the run. He said the full line-up will be announced soon, but among those who have already confirmed they will be appearing are S Club Juniors.
