GREEN Howards cadet Samantha Boyes is training for a very special run next month.

She has been chosen from the Saltburn Detachment of the Cleveland Army Cadet Force to carry the Queen's Baton as it passes through the area on Sunday, July 7, on its way to the Commonwealth Games, in Manchester.

Sixteen-year-old Samantha, who lives in Hob Hill Close, Saltburn, and is a student at Huntcliff School, will run for a short distance with the baton as it passes through Seaton Carew.

The baton contains a monitor that enables the light within it to pulse at the rate of the bearer's heart.

Samantha said she was completely in the dark as to who had nominated her for the role, but she regarded it as a great honour.

From September, she will be a student at the Army's Sixth Form College at Welbeck, Nottinghamshire, where potential officers are educated. Her ambition is to become an officer in the regular Army.
