A Northallerton doctor has retired after more than 30 years with the same practice. Dr John Cruickshank left the Mowbray House Surgery for the last time last week. While there, he developed a specialist knowledge and interest in obstetrics and gynaecology. He hopes to spend more time with his family and pursue his hobbies of choral singing, golf, bird watching and travel.
Biker hurt: Motorcyclist James O'Neill from Rufforth, near York, was in hospital last night after his machine left the road as he was riding along the B6265 from Whixley into Green Hammerton. The accident happened at about 10.45pm on Monday. Any witnesses are asked to call police on (01423) 539474.
PLANT CASH: Staff and pupils at the King James School, Knaresborough, raised £773 at a plant sale. The money is being split between Martin House Hospice and two other charities.

VILLAGE FIGHT: People in Tockwith, near York, are fighting plans to create a 100-ton-a-day stone-crushing plant on the edge of the village. They say it could endanger their health, would be too noisy and could cause traffic problems.
UNIVERSITY HONOUR: Dr David Potter, the inventor of the Psion personal organiser, is to be given an honorary degree by York University on July 11.
ART SHOW: The annual Yoredale Art Club exhibition opens at St Matthew's Church Hall in Leyburn tomorrow. The showcase for local talent runs until Sunday, opening daily at 10am, with some pieces for sale. Admission is free.
