PEOPLE living in Hartlepool's New Deal for Communities (NDC) area are being offered a chance to make a real difference to their neighbourhoods.
They are being urged to become volunteer appraisers, working alongside New Deal support staff to evaluate project proposals.
NDC in Hartlepool has received £54m of Government money to spend over ten years in an area stretching from Hart Lane to Belle Vue. Projects aim to improve health, raise education standards, reduce crime and create jobs.
A spokeswoman said: "The role of appraisers is to make sure the NDC steering group approves good projects that will make a real difference in the community.
"They don't need to have any specialist knowledge, it is the experience of living in the NDC area that counts.
"Residents might, however, want to appraise projects in areas in which they have a particular interest, for example reducing crime or improving health."
Forthcoming proposals that will need evaluating include the provision of security measures for home owners, activities for schoolchildren, various health projects and the creation of an Internet cafe for young people.
The spokeswoman said: "Residents who become appraisers will gain the satisfaction of knowing they are helping NDC to spend its money wisely on projects bringing the most benefits to the community.
"There are also personal advantages to be gained as residents becoming appraisers will benefit from new experiences, training and skills."
Training will be arranged and expenses covering travel and telephone calls will be reimbursed.
