PEOPLE in a Darlington street have appealed to the borough council to move a school bus stop away from their homes.

Residents of Hammond Drive say they are fed up with pupils hitting their cars with footballs and causing a nuisance.

In a recent incident, one man had eggs thrown at his car by pupils after he asked them to keep away from it.

Residents' association member Mick Kennedy said: "We are sick of these children being a nuisance and damaging our property.

"They kick their footballs against cars, which sets the alarms off, and when you tell them to go away you just get abuse."

People in the street want the bus stop to be moved away from their homes to a nearby row of shops.

Mr Kennedy said: "If the bus stopped at the shops, then not as many people would be disturbed."

But a spokesman for Darlington Borough Council said the stops, one at the junction of Humber Place and another at the junction of Shannon Way, were in the safest place.

The council spokesman said: "We have to put bus stops near to where the majority of children live.

"This is from a safety point of view, so large groups of children are not walking long distances and across busy roads. Also, we have to put them in places where it is safe for the buses to stop and manoeuvre."
