NEARLY 300 North Yorkshire jobs have been saved after a buyer was found for the chilled food business of collapsed food group Albert Fisher.

The UK subsidiary of US food giant Fresh Del Monte Produce has bought the operation from administrative receivers KPMG.

Its decision means the threat to the 280 workers in York, who make salads and dips, has been removed.

The move is also good news for 660 people employed at Methwold, in Norfolk, and 310 at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.

KPMG was appointed administrative receiver to Albert Fisher last month after the foods group ran up debts of £100m.

The City firm would not disclose the price paid for the chilled foods business but confirmed 1,250 jobs across the three sites had been saved.

Fresh Del Monte Produce is one of the world's largest producers of fresh-cut fruit and vegetables, but not linked to Del Monte Foods.

The acquisition means only the future of Albert Fisher's seafoods business, whose sites include Gosforth, on Tyneside, remains in doubt.
