CALLS to upgrade the A64 between York and Scarborough to dual carriageway are to be discussed at a high-profile Government meeting.
Transport Minister John Spellar has indicated that the future of the road would be considered at a meeting at Westminster next week.
Delegates from North Yorkshire county, Ryedale district and Scarborough borough councils will meet David Jamieson, the Department of Transport's parliamentary under secretary, on Tuesday, in a bid to highlight concerns about the busy road.
There has been a long-running campaign from residents and councillors to upgrade the road to combat congestion and frustration during the busy summer period.
Single-lane sections are considered accident blackspots, with dangerous junctions and bends blamed for a number of crashes in recent years.
Mr Spellar said: "The A64 is certainly one of the roads that is being looked at as a long-term problem."
North Yorkshire county councillor Peter Sowray said dualling would be a key topic raised by delegates.
