Darlington Primary School Sports Association has been awarded a grant of almost £3,500 to help organise tournaments and festivals.

The grant will pay for coaching fees, venue hire and equipment for the group of teachers who give support to pupils aged from four to 11 after school.

ROYAL EMBROIDERY: The Darlington Embroiders' Guild will visit Gainford Parish Church at the weekend, to display works based on the Queen's golden jubilee. The works will be on show from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, and 2pm to 6pm on Sunday.

JUBILEE FAIR: A jubilee fair will be held at Cockfield Community Centre, on Saturday, at 2pm. Proceeds will be in aid of the village Christmas lights appeal.

DIABETES TALK: A presentation about diabetes by a doctor from Middlesbrough General Hospital will be given in the education centre at Darlington Memorial Hospital on Monday. The event has been organised by the Darlington branch of Diabetes UK.

SWEET EVENT: Startforth Women's Institute is hosting an event called Chocolate Heaven, organised by Thornton's, at Startforth School, near Barnard Castle, on Monday, at 7.15pm.

KRUSH SOUNDS: Pop band Krush will play chart hits from the 1960s at an event organised by the Teesdale committee of Cancer Research UK on the Glaxo sports field, Barnard Castle, on Saturday, July 6, at 7.30pm. Tickets from Gillian Harle, on (01833) 637906.

JUBILEE DISPLAY: Villagers in Cotherstone are organising an exhibition of memorabilia from the past 50 years on July 6 and 7, in the village hall, to mark the Queen's golden jubilee. The Cotherstone Fun Weekend quoits match, which was cancelled because of heavy rain, will be held tomorrow, on the village green, weather permitting.

GARDENS OPEN: Gardens in Gainford will be open to the public on Sunday, from 2pm to 5.30pm, as part of the National Gardens Scheme. There will also be a sale of plants and an exhibition of crafts in St Mary's Church, followed by a songs of praise service at 6pm.

DANCE NIGHT: An open 50/50 dance is being held at Middleton-in-Teesdale Working Men's Club on Saturday, July 6, at 7.30pm Proceeds will go to the Middleton Outreach Group.

ORGAN APPEAL: St Mary's Church, Barnard Castle, is holding an open day on Saturday, in aid of the church's organ appeal. The event will end with a concert in the evening. The open day starts at 10am.
