PLAYERS at Ripon Ladies WRUFC celebrated this week after learning the club's promotion to the premiere league had been confirmed.

The club trounced all opposition in North National Division One last season to finish clear winners. But a proposed shake-up of the league structure by the WRFU had meant that its promotion to the national league, Premiere Two, was by no means certain.

But the sport's ruling body has decided not to make the changes, meaning Ripon will be in the big time next season. Come September, the players will be lining up against the likes of Saracens and Wasps.

This week club spokesman Katie Bell said the squad was ready. "I can't wait," she said. "The players really want to get stuck in.

"It is going to be a challenge, but there is no reason why we cannot do very well. We have got the players and a very good team spirit."

The club is facing a travel bill of thousands of pounds and is hoping to attract new sponsors. Anyone interested in sponsoring the club or training with Ripon Ladies can contact Miss Bell on 07989 443967 or club captain Caroline Bell on 07989 443934.
