Mike Dunn showed why he became the first player from the North-East to qualify for the Embassy World championships with a clinical display.

He moved into the quarter-finals beating Steve Burnett 5-1 with breaks of 43, 47, 50, 54 and culminating in a 127 clearance that thrilled this audience of snooker fans.

On this form he will take some stopping from winning the title of this Newcastle and Interbrew pro-am.

Chris West, the 19-year-old prospect from Whitley Bay, moved comfortably into the quarter-final stages beating last minute substitute Tony Short from Hartlepool 5-1 helped with a break of 85 setting up the possibility of a needle match with the other Tyneside prospect, 17-year-old Gary Wilson.

The two Leeds players dominated Wednesday evening's matches. P Lines with breaks of 42, 55, 67 and 78 beat young Gary Wilson, English U18 champion, 5-1, but Gary made a magnificent 109 break to win his only frame.

In the other match Kuldesh Johal beat Paul Lawrence 5-2 with breaks of 40, 44, 46, 50 and a marvellous 119 break.

Paul Lawrence replied with a 68 break ending an absolute feast of snooker for a packed audience.
