THE TUC has appointed Kevin Rowan as its northern regional secretary.
He joins the TUC from the GMB union's regional office where he was the education, research and legal officer.
He worked in shipbuilding for ten years and over the past 20 years has held a variety of positions in the union movement.
Mr Rowan said: "I am delighted to be taking up this position for the TUC.
"Economic regeneration in the North of England is a high priority, and I hope to build on the TUC's influence in the region to tackle the problems of unemployment, lack of skills and the decline in manufacturing.
"Trades union contributions to the skills agenda have meant that they are well placed and effective social partners. This will continue to benefit our regional economy as a whole.
"I look forward to the trades unions playing a central role in regional government developments, and securing the 2008 European City of Culture in Newcastle-Gateshead."
