A ROMANCE that blossomed during the black-out in the Second World War has led to 60 years of married bliss for a couple who are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

Jack and Edna Rudd, who live in the Aged Miners Homes, High Jobs Hill, Crook, celebrated their anniversary yesterday.

The couple met when Mrs Rudd was waiting for a bus in Stanley Crook, during the black-out.

Mrs Rudd, now 80, worked in the munitions factory at Newton Aycliffe, while Mr Rudd, 81, worked as a miner for 35 years until the closure of the pit at Roddymoor.

They were married at St Thomas' Church, Stanley Crook, on June 27, 1942, after a three-year courtship.

Most of their married life was spent in Stanley, with the exception of the past seven years, when they have been living at High Jobs Hill.

Mr and Mrs Rudd have a son, Robert, 54, and a daughter Jean, 53, grandsons Julian, 32, and Christopher, 30, a grandaughter Lindsey, 32, and great-grandchildren Amy, two, and Ryan, three.

The couple's family are treating them to a week in Jersey to mark the special occasion, during August.
