The lower Tees just gets better and better. Dave Smiddy generated plenty of excitement when he raised the top bream haul to a sensational 44.6.0 during Saturday's opening round of the Yarm Individual Summer League, writes JEFF HERBERT.
The Newman Scott ace led 16 double figured skimmer nets from peg 3 on the Harkers Farm length. Dave initially caught perch on the pole over chopped worm then changed to a mid river groundbait feeder approach enjoying bites all match putting 22 bream up to 2.8.0 into the keepnet, practically doubling the runner's up weight. Hirst Tackle's Ian Bates held onto second place by 4ozs as groundbait feeder and worm accounted for 22.7.0 of skimmers taken 2 below the Stockton root.

The opening Yarm AA three-hour Monday Evening Series saw Dave Smiddy breaking records again bagging another skimmer bream haul of 27.0.0 from the fisheries length below the town bridge. Lack of flow made it hard going for most during Sunday's Yarm AA's June Open on the Lower Tees. Garbolino's Alan Lepatourel on peg 184 searched mid river on groundbait feeder and worm and pulled out 14 skimmers plus bits to edge it on 23.4.0.

Moving upstream to the streamy sections sport was just as impressive in the Darlington and District Individual Championships at Over Dinsdale. Carrying an extra 4" the river was bang on for the skilled float anglers and 21 double figured nets resulted despite a disappointing entry of 34. Darlington's Eric Willans 2 above Rosehill Gutter went 2/3rds out on the waggler using red maggot and caster as an excellent mixed chub and roach net made for 36.4.0.

Chub failed to materialise in Thornaby's Annual Charity Open as 60 competitors battled it out on the Croft to Hurworth stretch.
A surprise trio of barbel which took the scales to 23.1.0 secured a runaway victory for Darlington's Dave Oxley. In the Salmon Pool Dave hooked the first specimen of 8.0.0 on stickfloat and caster edged along far bank willows.
The River Swale is also showing top early season form. Richmond's AS Spencer Cup on the Upper reaches around Broken Brea saw Graham Hutchinson net 13.11.0 of dace followed by Steve Hoggins 11.6.0 Andy Jones 11.1.0 and Graham Jones 10.11.0.
Northallerton & District's first open of the season delivered the goods big style producing a staggering chub bonanza for RSPS teamates Mick Hare and Jim Taylor. Fished on the Scruton reaches Mick hammered out a massive bag of 89.14.0.
Pegged on the straight between the ICI and Scruton Pools Jim Taylor worked waggler and maggot down the far side tempting 30 chub for an equally impressive 80.11.0.

In the Woodlands Wednesday Open on Kestrel Curlew and Wagtail Lakes a mixed bag of 75.8.0 put local expert Elton Tackle's Alan Gregory in front spearheaded by a trio of carp for 34.0.0 - biggest a mirror of 14.7.0.
Starting on the caster at 3 metres off Kestrel's corner peg 18 brought the silver fish on the feed catching 30.0.0 before a change to paste at 6 metres got amongst the carp. Four pegs away on Kestrel 22 sat last week's winner Kevin Holvey. Another of the Elton Tackle contingent Kevin on pellet close in at 5 metres poled his way to 67.11.0 of carp.

Jubilee Lakes 2.4 rod average. Newcastle's Derek Stonehouse grassed a huge rainbow of 17.15.0 on a black buzzer. Other doubles include a rainbow of 14.13.0 on a damsel for Geoff Loughlan of Newcastle and Billingham's Brian Elliott 13.4.0 to an olive bunny leach. Generally hard fishing hot bright conditions with strong winds.
Olive and black lures doing well some surface sport with hoppers and CDC buzzers.
Leighton - a cold peaty colour following torrential rain which filled the reservoir and trout staying well down. Lures performing best Dawsons olive and black fritz. Some late evening action on traditional flies. Best rainbow of 6.0.0 went to Stockton's P Deavny in a week when 160
visitors landed 286 trout.
