PRIMARY school youngsters have been given their first experience of "big" school by being shown what fun learning can be.

More than 100 youngsters from the Northallerton area cluster of primary schools spent a day at the town's Allertonshire School.

After a morning of instruction from the Midlands-based Architectural Workshop, they spent an afternoon putting their new skills to good use. Using simple materials they created a series of structures, varying from a millennium bridge to animals, buildings and even an Angel of the North.

"The idea was to allow them to work as a team, have a social experience and make the transition to secondary school as painless as possible and it seems to have worked," said a spokesman.
