A SCHEME that allows disabled people to buy private care is proving popular, according to Durham County Council officials.
More than 120 social services clients have taken advantage of the direct payments system introduced by the council in January.
Under the scheme, the council pays money to disabled people, including those with sensory impairments and learning disabilities, so they can get community care assistance from companies or voluntary organisations instead of from the council.
The Labour-run council, one of about 30 authorities to run such a scheme, says it gives disabled people greater control over provision of care.
The council says the take-up has been high, that many organisations see the scheme as an important part of independent living, and that both clients and carers in County Durham agree.
