A NORTH Yorkshire pedigree breeder is celebrating a major success at the Royal Highland Show.

Gordon Brooks and family took the champion bull title and reserve overall title with Johan of Bonlea, their home-bred Aberdeen Angus bull, seen, above, with Mr Brooks.

Mr Brooks, of Hornby Grange, Little Smeaton, was particularly pleased to have taken the title at such a major event - and in Scotland, the home of the breed.

"We are just a small family outfit compared to some of the big boys that were there," he said.

There were 80 animals in the Aberdeen Angus classes and the 3-year-old Johan also led the Aberdeen Angus team which took the native breed title.

Mr Brooks has been involved with the breed since 1976 but it became a family concern involving his wife, Lyn, son, James, and daughter, Victoria, in 1994.

The Bonlea Angus herd consists of 15 pedigree cows, of which six or seven will go to next month's Great Yorkshire Show.

Johan was best bull at this year's Newark Show and will compete at the Royal and Great Yorkshire shows before going to the Orkneys and to a new owner who bought him at the Highland.

The Brooks also won a second place at the Highland with a heifer.
