WARNINGS have been issued to caravan owners after a spate of thefts.

Crook Police said five caravans have been stolen from the area this month.

Sergeant Billy Hugill said: "We are asking people to be extra vigilant and keep an eye out for suspicious characters.''

Thieves broke into a compound on the Tow Law Industrial Estate on Tuesday and stole a Swift Dublet Classic four-berth caravan with a green stripe, worth £8,000.

Last Saturday, an Ellisse Hurricane caravan, with a green stripe, was stolen from outside The Sportsmans pub, in Toft Hill.

A Hobby Prestige, white with a blue stripe, was taken from Oakleaf Caravan Park, Wolsingham, on June 19. At Westerton layby, Binchester Lane Ends, near Spennymoor, on June 8, a Buccaneer Elan caravan was taken; and on June 3, an Elddis caravan was taken from Bowes,.
