OFFICIALS say a new scheme that allows disabled people to buy private care is proving popular.
More than 120 social services clients have taken advantage of Direct Payments introduced by Durham County Council in January.
Under the scheme, the council pays cash to disabled people, including those with sensory impairments and learning disabilities, so they can get community care assistance from companies or voluntary organisations instead of from the council.
The Labour-run council, one of about 30 authorities to run such a scheme, says it gives the disabled greater control over who provides their care and how.
The council says the take-up has been so high that many organisations see the scheme as an important part of independent living and that both clients and carers in County Durham agree.
Social Services clients Stuart and Susan, from Seaham, decided to take up the Direct Payments option.
Susan said: "It gives us much better flexibility and a much wider choice of care.
"We interviewed our care worker and now she is like a family friend."
Joan Harper, a social worker in east Durham, said: "It is a very flexible service, which accommodates their needs.
"It empowers clients to regain their independence and to be in control of their own lives."
There is a direct payments co-ordinator who can provide more information and advice to anyone interested in the scheme.
The co-ordinator will make a home visit if required and can give advice and practical help on the recruitment and employment of personal care workers, assist with the paperwork, provide a payroll service and give peer support contacts.
For further details about the scheme call the co-ordinator on 0191-384 9111.
