NURSES swapped a ward for a prison wing to thank inmates for their charity effort.
Prisoners at Durham Jail raised more than £1,400 for the Treetops ward at the University Hospital of North Durham through a day of events, which included a marathon bench press, half-marathon run and Channel row in the prison gym.
They were rewarded by a visit from nurses from the ward, which looks after disabled youngsters. Colin Smith, of the Treetops unit, said: "Over the years, the staff and inmates from local prisons have been very kind in supporting the children's unit.
"This latest fundraising event is brilliant, with the money being used to help disabled children on the Treetops unit. Well done, and many thanks to all participants, donators and organisers."
A prison spokesman said: "It was a fantastic day. The prisoners just wanted to put something back into the community. It wasn't just the people who took part donating money either. Other prisoners and friends and family contributed."
