AN MP has given his constituents a chance to raise issues affecting their community during the launch of his annual parliamentary report on Friday.
Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Ashok Kumar held a public launch of his parliamentary report for the first time, and was joined by Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon and David Walsh, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.
A copy of his report, which he began issuing to every household in his constituency following his election in 1997, gives people an annual update on issues affecting the area that have been raised in parliament, and any future issues that could have an impact on the area.
During the launch in Langdon Square Community Centre, Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough, the public were able to ask questions and discuss important issues with each of the representatives.
Mr Kumar also announced that he and Mr Mallon would meet each month to discuss issues regarding Middlesbrough which could be raised in parliament.
Mr Kumar said: "It is all about being accountable to the people I represent and going out to meet the public and hear their concerns. Many of the questions were directed at Mr Mallon and Mr Walsh, and I think they would agree that it is vital to meet the public in person.
"There is always a concern that people think once you are elected they never see you, and I have always done my best to avoid that. That is why I will be holding a public launch every year and anyone is welcome to come and speak to me."
