PLANS for a new hockey centre of excellence at Eggles-cliffe School, in Eaglescliffe, have won the support of parish councillors.
The whole community would benefit from the new £390,000 all-weather pitch, which could open in October next year if the development goes ahead.
The pitch would be used by the school and the public throughout the year and will have a ten-year life span.
Egglescliffe parish council has met with the school to discuss the plans.
Headteacher Angela Darnell said: "As a teacher and a member of this parish, I think it's a great idea. We desperately need extra facilities.
"Instead of hanging around on the streets, young people could get involved with sport."
The new pitch will provide a better and safer environment for PE lessons and give people in the community a chance to play sport.
Deputy headteacher Paul Davison said fencing and hedges around the pitch would act as a noise and a security barrier for the school and adjoining homes.
Parish council vice-chairman Sue Ireland said: "To have a facility like this would be an honour for the parish. You have our full support."
