A FATHER has died after falling on rocks at a North Yorkshire beauty spot.
Steve Massender, 31, a chef at Scarborough General Hospital, was on rocks at Scalby Mills, north of the resort, when the accident happened.
Flags were flying at half mast at the hospital yesterday as stunned staff arrived at work to discover the news.
The hospital's communication manager, Gilly Collinson, said: "Everyone is absolutely devastated. There is a very sombre mood at the hospital because Steve was a very popular member of staff."
Mr Massender had been on the beach with his five-year-old son, Daniel, and had planned to take him to an event at Peasholm Park.
Police believe he may have slipped on rocks and suffered a severe head injury.
A spokesman said: "We are investigating whether Mr Massender tripped, became unconscious and drowned."
North Yorkshire East Coroner Michael Oakley has been informed.
