AN Iraqi refugee living on Teesside is helping other asylum seekers to bridge the language gap.
Silvan Khoshaba, who came to the North-East with her family last December, has been working through learndirect's Skills For Life programme to help improve her communications and computer skills.
After completing her studies at the local learning centre Archon 2000, in Stockton, the 27-year-old has decided to stay on, working as a volunteer with other refugees and new learners.
The centre in Bridge Road offers a wide range of short programmes, including on-line learning courses.
Silvan recently received a certificate marking her success from Sir Tony Greener, chairman of Ufi, the Government-backed organisation that runs and promotes learndirect.
She said: "My English was very basic when I came here but the staff are very friendly and understand our needs very well.
"Studying of any kind is very difficult for women in Iraq and I'm looking forward to making the most of the opportunities available to me now."
Archon 2000 is a community-based centre, which has been based in Stockton for the past 18 years.
The centre is open from 8.30am to 9pm Monday to Friday.
