ANIMAL lovers have condemned thieves who broke into a charity rescue centre and stole masses of pet food.
Staff at the Blue Cross animal adoption centre, in Topcliffe, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, are appealing to local people and businesses to help replace the food, which would have fed the facility's dogs and cats for the next five months.
The culprits smashed through a storeroom door on Sunday night, before taking 60 sackfuls of recently delivered food, and also some which had been donated by local residents.
Deputy manager of the centre, Jackie Haw, said: "We're devastated that anybody could do such a thing. Apart from the food we buy ourselves, much of our pet food is donated by kind local people.
"We also had packs of dog food donated to us for our dog show at Pateley Bridge, on July 14, stolen. None of the staff here can believe that people can be so callous.
