NEARLY 1,000 brightly coloured balloons are proving a grand fundraiser for a Spennymoor school.
Red, green, blue and yellow balloons soared high into the sky above St Charles RC Primary School, in Durham Road.
The launch should have signalled the start of the school's sports day, but a sudden downpour immediately afterwards sent children and parents running for cover.
Each balloon brought in £1 for the Friends of St Charles, while Bethany Cruddas, aged five, and her nine-year-old brother Joshua, who live in Chilton, won prizes for selling the most and raising £90.
All are tagged and the one which travels the furthest will win a prize for its sponsor. October 3 is the race deadline.
