Newcastle KBS Vipers general manager Alex Dampier has flown to Canada to take a look at first hand what import players are available for the new Findus British National Legue season, which begins in September.
Dampier has already signed Martin Lapointe, a 5ft 11ins, 180lb defenceman from East Coast Hockey League side Augusta Lynx. Also former Sheffield Steelers and Billingham Eagles defenceman Andre Malo. Four others of the eight permitted import berths have been offers.
Netminder Pasi Raitanen, who stared last season with Peterborough Pirates before completing the play-offs at Edinburgh Capitals and ex-Newcastle Riverkings forward Rob Trumbley are two of those four.
Dampier could not be drawn on who the remaining duo is and who targets are.
Of the British players that will be in the squad former Whitley Warriors forward Simon Leach has signed local clubs Billingham Eagles, Sunderland Chiefs and Whitley Warriors have good British talent that can step up to the FBNL. It will also be possible for these players to play for their own clubs in English national hockey league Northern Conference.
Billingham's Stephen Wallace and Richie Thornton, Sunderland's Adam Carr and Whitley Bay's Karl Culley, Andrew Carter and James Hutchinson are among local players that will be given an opportunity to earn a place in KBS Vipers squad in matches against Edinburgh Capitals.
The first is at Edinburgh on Sunday, August 18 (face-off 6pm) with the return at Newcastle Telewest Arena on September 1.
