A FORMER public toilet in a moorland village has been reopened following a campaign by villagers, a Women's Institute (WI), and a pub landlord.
The toilet, adjoining the Mitre Tavern at Glaisdale, in the North York Moors National Park, has been closed for some years.
WI spokeswoman Julie Lake said: "There is a big need for a toilet because of the large number of walkers coming into the village and residents are constantly being asked where there is one."
She said the national park authority had agreed to pay for alterations to be carried out to the building after the WI agreed to find the money for maintenance and cleaning.
Councillor Herbert Tindall, vice-chairman of the authority, whose ward includes Glaisdale, said the county council had also contributed towards the reopening costs.
He also said the landlord of the pub, Dave Mullins, had been a leading supporter of the reopening campaign, along with Glaisdale parish council and the village's millennium committee.
