A FORMER headteacher of St Francis Xavier RC school in Richmond will become a permanent deacon in the Roman Catholic Church today.
The ordination, the first at the town's St Joseph and St Francis Xavier church for many years, is the culmination of a three-year study programme which involved Roger Sparks and his wife, Frances, in theological and pastoral sessions.
He becomes one of 11 married men in the diocese whose main task is charitable work among those outside the church, including the sick and housebound, as well as an active ministry within the church.
As a permanent deacon, Mr Sparks will work as a member of the parish team in Richmond but also respond to the needs of people outside that area.
Today's service, at noon, will be conducted by the Right Reverend John Crowley, Bishop of Middlesbrough, who will be aided by other diocesan priests and deacons.
Councillor Stuart Parsons, Mayor of Richmond, his consort, local clergy and representatives of Churches Together in Richmond have also been invited.
