A CARNIVAL revived last year after a 20-year absence has earned a permanent place in Crook's summer calendar.
Organisers are confident they can build on the success of Saturday's event, which was opened by Government Chief Whip and North West Durham MP Hilary Armstrong.
The carnival began with a parade to Peases West sports ground, featuring carnival queen Toni Marsh and her attendants, Samantha Newton and Gemma Burnham, where community groups had set out stalls.
Children from St Cuthbert's RC Primary School swept the board in an art competition, winning cups and a plaque given by Hays Travel, which was represented by manager Jill Maddison.
Winners of a window dressing competition, judged by members of Wear Valley District Council, were Kents Decorators, Cleminsons, of North Terrace, and Dale Care.
Compere for the event was Harry Rowell, from Tow Law.
A committee member said: "We hope to carry on next year and build it back up."
