SCARBOROUGH'S Edgehill housing estate, one of the most run-down in North Yorkshire, is to get a multi-million pound new look with the building of 166 homes.
About 245 homes on the estate have been demolished, and a further 31 are due to be razed shortly as part of a scheme to revitalise the hillside area.
Plans have been submitted to Scarborough Borough Council by Oakapple Homes to build the homes, many of which will be a private scheme.
The Government has backed the regeneration of the area and Scarborough council has sold part of the land to provide the catalyst to rejuvenate the estate.
County councillor John Ritchie, who represents the area, said: "This is great news. The estate is an area which is on the main approach to Scarborough and the new look be very welcome."
A community centre being built on the estate is due to open later this summer.
David Ratcliffe, managing director of Oakapple Homes, said: "We will be providing a wide range of homes to sell, ranging from two-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom detached houses. We are now interested to know whether people in the Edgehill area want to give it a new name to go with its new image."
