COUNCILLORS in Middlesbrough are expected to give approval today to the compulsory purchase of a set of derelict flats.
Demolition work at the flats in Trinity Crescent, North Ormesby, has already begun as part of a massive redevelopment of the area.
But Middlesbrough Council is having trouble reaching an agreement with absentee flat owners, so needs a compulsory purchase order to bring the flats down in their entirety.
The scheme to revitalise the area around the market square is backed by most residents, who have suffered from vandalism, drug-taking and drinking on the estate. Plans include new housing, a medical centre and a community centre.
Councillor Ron Lowes, the authority's executive member for the environment, said the board would be asked to approve the order.
"This is an important stage in paving the way for the future of North Ormesby. I am looking forward to working with local people to realise the vision for their area," he said.
